Thailand has hundreds of islands, but visitors mostly choose among about a dozen. The right choice depends on four things: the month you travel, how much time you can spend in transit, what you want to do (swim, dive, party, rest), and your budget. Because the Andaman coast and the Gulf of Thailand have opposite weather patterns, the first decision is usually the coast. This guide walks you through that decision and then compares the main islands. For weather detail see best time by region.

Step 1: pick the coast by month

Travel monthChooseWhy
Nov to AprAndaman: Phuket, Krabi, Lanta, Lipe, Phi Phi, Khao LakCalm seas and best visibility
Jan to AugGulf: Samui, Phangan, TaoDriest period for the Gulf, April-August often good
May to OctGulf preferably; Andaman only with flexible plansSouthwest monsoon on the west coast
Oct to DecAndaman (late Nov to Dec)Gulf has its heaviest rain
Note

This is a general pattern. Recent years have been less predictable, so check the Thai Meteorological Department and ferry operators before you go.

Step 2: compare the islands

Island profiles

Phuket

Thailand's largest island has an international airport, a huge range of accommodation and the widest set of beach options, from lively Patong to quieter Kata, Karon and Nai Harn on the west and calmer beaches on the east and north. It suits a first trip, families and anyone who wants flexibility. West-coast beaches become dangerous for swimming in the monsoon. See Phuket where to stay and Phuket beaches guide.

Krabi and Railay

Krabi province blends mainland towns such as Ao Nang with islands, cliffs and boat trips. Railay is reachable only by boat and is popular for climbing and quieter evenings. Krabi suits travellers who like scenery and day tours without the scale of Phuket. See the Krabi hub and Krabi islands and Railay guide.

Koh Phi Phi

Small, dramatic and famous, with no cars and a busy day-trip crowd. Plan to stay overnight if you want to see it when the boats leave. It is easy to combine with Phuket or Krabi. See how to get to Koh Phi Phi.

Koh Lanta

Quieter than Phuket or Phi Phi, with long beaches on the west coast and an old town on the east. It is a good choice if you want to relax without hotel-resort scale. See Koh Lanta where to stay.

Koh Lipe

Close to the Malaysian border with strikingly clear water and a compact island feel. It is remote and its access is seasonal, so allow extra travel time and plan around the season. See how to get to Koh Lipe and Koh Lipe where to stay.

Koh Samui

The Gulf's largest and most developed island, with its own airport and a wide mix of resort, villa and mid-range options. It is a good base for families and for travellers who want convenience. See Koh Samui where to stay.

Koh Phangan

Known for the Full Moon Party but equally for quiet northern and western bays, wellness retreats and yoga. Choose your area carefully, as party zones and quiet zones are very different. See the Full Moon Party guide.

Koh Tao

The standout choice for learning to dive, with many dive schools and relatively sheltered sites. Check safety standards, instructor credentials and insurance when choosing a school. See Koh Tao diving courses.

Koh Chang

Forested and hilly, near the Cambodian border, with a slower pace and a rainier season. It is a weekend-style option from Bangkok. See the Koh Chang guide.

Tip

Avoid trying to fit more than two islands in a week. Each ferry crossing can use half a day once you add transfers, check-in and waiting.

Combining islands

Two natural pairings work well:

  1. Andaman loop: Phuket, Phi Phi, Krabi, Lanta. Ferries link all of them in high season.
  2. Gulf triangle: Samui, Phangan, Tao. A single ferry company network connects them in a day each way. See the Samui, Phangan and Tao ferry guide.

Linking the Andaman and the Gulf in one trip requires crossing the peninsula by road, train or a flight through Bangkok; it can take a day or more. See getting around Thailand.

Marine park rules and safety

Many islands are inside marine national parks that charge entry fees (set by the park authority, check the Department of National Parks) and restrict touching coral, feeding fish and anchoring. Follow flags and life-saving advice, wear a life jacket on boats and respect closures. For wider safety advice see Thailand safety, scams and health.

FAQ

Which Thai island is best for first-time visitors?

Phuket and Koh Samui are the easiest because they have airports and many types of accommodation. Phuket has more variety, while Samui is calmer and more resort-oriented.

Which island has the clearest water?

Water clarity depends on season and wind more than island. In general, the Andaman coast is clearest in the dry season, and islands like Koh Lipe and the Similans are often noted for visibility. Check conditions rather than expecting a guarantee.

Which Thai island is cheapest?

Koh Phangan, Koh Tao and Koh Lanta tend to offer lower-cost accommodation than Phuket or Koh Lipe, especially in the shoulder season. Compare current prices.

Can I visit two coasts in one trip?

Yes, but plan the transfer day. Flying via Bangkok or using a train-and-bus combination across the peninsula takes time. Many travellers pick one coast per trip to avoid transit.

Which island is best in September?

The Gulf islands are generally the better option, since the Andaman coast is in the heart of the monsoon, though weather can vary. Check forecasts before you commit.

Are the islands safe for solo travellers?

Generally yes, with normal precautions: keep valuables secure, avoid walking alone late at night on dark paths, avoid unlicensed motorbike riding and respect sea conditions.
