Koh Lipe is small, and you can walk from one side to the other in under an hour, so the choice of beach is mostly about atmosphere, water conditions and how much noise you want. This guide compares the main areas, rough budgets and a simple way to decide.

How the island is laid out

Lipe is shaped roughly like a flat island with a main beach on the south and a long street running across it. Three beaches matter most:

  • Pattaya Beach on the south, the biggest and busiest.
  • Sunrise Beach on the east, wide and quieter.
  • Sunset Beach on the west, calm and a short walk from the centre.

Walking Street is the main pedestrian lane that connects the beaches, lined with restaurants, bars and shops.

The island has no cars on the main paths, so you walk or take a small motorbike taxi or boat. Your luggage is often carried by a local driver from the pier.

Water depth and conditions vary with tide and season. Check the beach flags and ask your hotel.

Pattaya Beach

This is the main beach and the first one most visitors see after landing. It has the widest choice of rooms, restaurants and dive centres. Evenings are lively, with music in some bars. Long-tail boats and speedboats use parts of the bay, so swim only in the marked areas.

Pros: Lots of choice, central, easy for boat trips. Cons: Crowded in high season, more noise.

Sunrise Beach

A long beach on the east side, usually calmer, with gentle shallow water and sunrise views. It has a mix of beachfront bungalows and mid-range resorts. It is a good base if you want quiet mornings and a short walk into town.

Pros: Space, calm water, family-friendly. Cons: Tide can be low in the afternoon, fewer late-night options.

Sunset Beach

The west-facing beach is calmer and has good sunsets. Accommodation tends toward small resorts and bungalows. It is a short walk to Walking Street, but late at night you may prefer a motorbike taxi.

Pros: Scenic and relaxed. Cons: Fewer restaurants right on the beach in some stretches.

Walking Street area

Staying close to the centre means you can eat, shop and book trips on foot. Rooms here are often simpler and more compact, and it can be noisy. It works for a short stay or if you plan to be out most of the day.

Tip

If you are sensitive to noise, ask for a room away from the nearest bar and check the direction the room faces. Many guesthouses list this in their descriptions.

What to check before booking

  1. Distance from the pier, and whether pickup is included.
  2. Whether the room is beachfront or a few streets back.
  3. Air-con and hot water, which not every budget room has.
  4. Power outages and water supply, which can occur on small islands. Ask about backup power.
  5. Cancellation terms if boats stop running.

Safety and practicalities

Beach flags show swimming conditions. Avoid swimming near boat lanes, and do not leave valuables unattended on the sand. There are ATMs but cash can run low, so bring extra. For emergencies in Thailand dial 1669 for medical help, 191 for police and 1155 for the Tourist Police.

FAQ

Which beach is best for families?

Sunrise Beach is often chosen for its wide, shallow shoreline, though tides change what you find. Ask the hotel about the current swimming conditions.

Is Pattaya Beach on Koh Lipe the same as Pattaya city?

No. It shares only the name. Koh Lipe is in Satun province in the south.

Can I stay inland to save money?

Yes. Rooms a few streets from the beach are cheaper, and the island is small enough that you can walk to the beach in minutes.

Do I need to book in advance?

For December, January and holidays, yes. At other times you can often find rooms on arrival, but popular places still fill up.

Is it noisy at night?

Pattaya Beach and Walking Street can be, especially in high season. Sunset and Sunrise beaches are generally quieter.

How do I get to my hotel from the pier?

Many hotels send a porter or arrange pickup. Walk or use a motorbike taxi if not. Confirm when you book.
