Where you sleep in Pattaya shapes the trip more than in most Thai destinations. The same city holds a very loud entertainment district, calm residential bays, big shopping centres and quiet resorts, and a hotel just two kilometres from your plan can feel like a different place. This guide compares the main areas from north to south, then helps you choose based on trip type, budget and noise tolerance. It complements our Pattaya hub and the things to do in Pattaya guide.
Prices are approximate ranges (as of 2026) and vary by season, the day of the week and the star level. Check current rates on the hotel's own page or the booking site you use.

Wong Amat and Naklua (north)
Wong Amat Beach and the Naklua district north of the city form the calmest part of the main coast. Sand is usually cleaner than at the central beach, and the area has some of Pattaya's larger resorts and beach clubs. It is also close to the Sanctuary of Truth and to the Naklua fish market and seafood restaurants. Public transport is thinner, so expect to use songthaews, taxis or the hotel shuttle to reach the centre.
Choose it if you want a resort-style stay, you have children, or you want a quieter base with easy access to the main sights.
Central Pattaya: Beach Road and Second Road
Central Pattaya runs from North Pattaya Road down to the Walking Street junction. It has the highest concentration of hotels, shopping malls, restaurants and convenience shops, and the beach is across the road. Songthaews run along Beach Road and Second Road, so the area is easy to navigate without a vehicle. The disadvantages are noise, traffic and visible adult entertainment close to some hotels. If you book here, request a quieter room facing away from the street and check the surroundings on a map.
Choose it if you want convenience and a short stay, especially if you are using the city as a stopover.
South Pattaya and Walking Street
South Pattaya, around Walking Street, is the nightlife core of the city, with bars, clubs and live music venues. Hotels here can be inexpensive and well located for nightlife, but sleeping can be difficult and the environment is not suited to young children. Treat it as a base only if nightlife is the reason for your trip. Bali Hai pier, where Koh Larn ferries depart, is at the southern end of Walking Street, which is a convenience for island trips.
In nightlife areas, check bills carefully, avoid unlicensed taxis, keep your phone and wallet out of sight and decline unsolicited offers. Emergency numbers: police 191, medical emergency 1669, Tourist Police 1155.
Pratumnak Hill
Pratumnak sits on a ridge between South Pattaya and Jomtien. Roads are hilly and there is little pedestrian infrastructure, but the neighbourhood is quiet, has small beaches such as Cosy Beach and a growing café and restaurant scene. Views from upper-floor rooms can be good. You will need a songthaew, taxi or ride-hailing app for most trips. Wat Phra Yai and several viewpoints are within walking distance for fit travellers.
Choose it if you want to be near the city but away from the noise.
Jomtien Beach
Jomtien is a long, straight beach that runs south from Pratumnak. Waters are generally calmer and the beach has a relaxed holiday atmosphere, with a night market, seafood restaurants and plenty of condo-style apartments. It is popular with long-stay travellers, families and visitors who want better value for money than central Pattaya. A songthaew or taxi to the centre takes 15 to 30 minutes, depending on traffic.
Beach activities such as banana-boat rides, jet-skis and sunbed hire are available, but quality and safety vary. See the safety tips in our things to do guide.
Dongtan and Cosy Beach
At the Jomtien end of Pratumnak, Dongtan Beach and Cosy Beach form a small, relaxed beach area with a quieter, more residential feel than Jomtien. Facilities are simpler than at Jomtien, but there are cafes and beachfront restaurants. It is useful for travellers who want a calm but not remote spot.
Which area for which traveller?
| Traveller type | Suggested area | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Family with young children | Wong Amat, Jomtien, Pratumnak | Quieter, more space, calmer beach conditions |
| Couple seeking a resort | Wong Amat or Naklua | Beachfront resorts, privacy |
| First-timer on a 2-night stop | Central Pattaya | Everything close, easy transport |
| Nightlife visitor | South Pattaya | Walking distance to venues and Koh Larn pier |
| Budget or long-stay | Jomtien or Pratumnak | Lower rates, condo-style stays |
| Day-trip focused (Koh Larn) | Near Bali Hai pier or South Pattaya | Short transfer, early boat |
Types of accommodation
- Hostels and guesthouses: dorm beds and basic rooms start around THB 300-800 (approx., as of 2026), and are concentrated in central and south Pattaya.
- Mid-range hotels: the largest category, often with pools, breakfast and views.
- Resorts and beachfront hotels: more common in Wong Amat, Naklua, Pratumnak and Jomtien.
- Serviced apartments and condos: useful for stays of a week or more, with a kitchen or laundry.
Weekends, Thai holidays and the peak months of November to February can raise prices significantly. Rooms may be cheaper in the rainy season (June to October), when boat trips are less reliable but hotels offer promotions.
What to check before you book
- Exact location on a map: a hotel may be listed as "Pattaya" but sit far from the beach or from the area you want.
- Noise: read recent guest comments for mentions of nightclub or construction noise.
- Family needs: child-friendly pools, connecting rooms and breakfast times.
- Cancellation terms: rainy-season storms and flight changes can affect plans.
- Transport: how you will get from the airport or bus terminal, and how you will reach Koh Larn if you want an island day.
- Safe deposit and Wi-Fi: useful for valuables and remote work.
- Local rules and registration: hotels must register guests, so carry your passport.

Sample 3-night split
If you want variety, you can split your stay: two nights at a quiet resort in Wong Amat, then one night near Bali Hai pier before an early boat to Koh Larn. This reduces travel on the day of the boat trip but adds a hotel change, so it works best with light luggage.
FAQ
What is the best area to stay in Pattaya for first-timers?
Central Pattaya is the most convenient and has the greatest choice, but it is also the busiest. Quiet travellers may prefer Pratumnak or Wong Amat.
Where should families stay in Pattaya?
Jomtien, Pratumnak and the Wong Amat and Naklua area tend to suit families, as they are calmer than the Walking Street area.
Is Walking Street a good place to stay?
Only if you want nightlife. It is loud late into the night and is not suited to young children.
Is Jomtien better than Pattaya Beach?
Jomtien is generally quieter and longer, but further from the central restaurants and malls. Both have busy stretches and commercial water sports.
Do I need a car in Pattaya?
No. Songthaews, taxis and ride-hailing apps are enough for most visitors. A car helps for out-of-town attractions such as the zoo or garden parks.
