Hua Hin has long been one of Thailand's easiest weekend destinations, a seaside town about 200 km south-west of Bangkok that combines a wide beach, old-fashioned Thai charm, a very good market scene and decent infrastructure. It is not a party island and not a diving base. People come for slow mornings, long seafood dinners, golf, and day trips into the hills and wetlands nearby.
This guide covers how to get there, when to go, where to stay, what to do and what it costs, and ends with a three-day itinerary. It builds on the overview on the Hua Hin hub. If you are starting from the capital, see our Bangkok hub.
All times, prices and opening days are approximate and are written as of 2026. Operators and attractions change them, so verify on the official page.
Is Hua Hin right for you?
| Choose Hua Hin if you want... | Choose another destination if you want... |
|---|---|
| A short, easy beach break from Bangkok | Clear water and coral (try the islands in our which island guide) |
| Night markets and seafood | Big nightlife or beach parties |
| Golf, spas and calm resorts | Backpacker social scenes |
| A base for national-park day trips | Long boat-hopping itineraries |
How to get there
By minivan or bus: the most common budget choice. Vans and coaches from Bangkok typically take 3 to 4 hours, depending on traffic, and depart from several parts of the city including the Southern Bus Terminal. Vans are quick but compact, while coaches have more legroom. Check the Transport Co. site or the operator for timetables.
By train: trains on the southern line take about 4 to 5 hours from Bangkok and arrive at the heritage Hua Hin station. Services, classes and fares change, so check the State Railway of Thailand website. A daytime train gives a scenic and unhurried arrival, though road options are faster.
By car: Highway 4 and Highway 35 are the main routes, usually 2.5 to 3.5 hours. Expect heavy traffic on Friday evenings and at the end of long weekends, and rest stops are plentiful.
By air: Hua Hin Airport sees limited services (as of 2026, check availability). Many visitors fly to Bangkok and continue by road. See the airport to city guide for how the Bangkok airports link to the city.
If you land at Suvarnabhumi Airport, a pre-booked private transfer to Hua Hin takes roughly 3 hours and avoids a cross-city transfer. Compare vans, shuttles and private cars, and confirm the price before boarding.
Best time to visit
November to February is the most comfortable and the busiest. March to May is hot, with strong sun, and prices can be lower outside holidays. June to October is the rainy season with sporadic downpours, though Hua Hin tends to get less rain than many parts of the country. Strong winds in some months favour kiteboarding. For national comparisons, see Thailand best time by region.
Where to stay
| Area | Character | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Town centre and beachfront | Busy, walkable, near the night market | First-timers, short stays |
| South of the centre (Soi 51 and beyond) | Quiet beach clubs and resorts | Couples, families |
| Khao Takiab | Hilltop temple, calmer beach | Quiet stays, families |
| Cha-am | Local Thai weekend atmosphere, lower prices | Budget travellers |
| Pranburi | Remote, nature-focused, kitesurfing | Couples, nature-lovers |
Weekend rates are noticeably higher than weekday rates. Book early for the November to February season.
What to do in Hua Hin
Beach and sea
The main beach is wide and shallow with soft sand, good for walking, horse rides and kite flying. Water clarity varies and is not tropical-island clear. Swim between lifeguard flags and avoid the water after heavy storms. Khao Takiab and the beaches south of town are generally less crowded.
Markets and food
- Hua Hin Night Market: daily street of food stalls, seafood restaurants and souvenirs.
- Cicada Market and Tamarind Market: weekend art-and-craft markets with live music, usually on certain nights only (check opening days).
- Fishing pier: casual restaurants serving the day's catch. Ask the price per kilo before you order.
A meal at a street stall costs roughly THB 60-150 per dish, a seafood restaurant meal often THB 400-1,200 per person (approx., as of 2026). Always confirm the weight and price when ordering whole fish or crab.
Heritage and culture
- Hua Hin Railway Station: the historic pavilion and royal waiting room, free to view.
- Maruekhathayawan Palace (Cha-am): a royal summer palace built from teak with seaside views. Check opening hours and dress rules with the official site because the palace is part of an active royal property.
- Wat Huay Mongkol: a temple with a very large Buddha image about 15 km from town.
Nature and day trips
- Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park: about an hour south, with limestone hills, mangroves, wetlands and the Phraya Nakhon Cave with its royal pavilion. Entry fees and path conditions are on the Department of National Parks website. Bring water and hiking shoes.
- Pranburi Forest Park: a small park with mangroves and a boardwalk.
- Kaeng Krachan National Park: a large forest park inland, better as a longer outing and sometimes affected by seasonal closures.
- Waterparks and theme attractions: Vana Nava Water Jungle and Santorini Park are popular, family-oriented options. Check current opening days and ticket prices.
Golf and wellness
Hua Hin has a long golf history with many courses and driving ranges. The resort spas and local massage shops are good value. Look for licensed operators.

Getting around and safety
Hua Hin centre is compact, but the distances to Khao Takiab and the night market can be too long to walk in midday heat. Songthaews and tuk-tuks require price negotiation, ride-hailing apps work in places, and taxis are less common. If you rent a motorbike, wear a helmet and avoid the main highway at night. Take sun protection, insect repellent and a rain layer in the wet season. In emergencies call 191 (police), 1669 (medical emergency) or 1155 (Tourist Police). Consider travel insurance that covers the activities you intend to do.
Combining Hua Hin with other trips
Hua Hin pairs naturally with Bangkok as a pre- or post-city beach break. On the opposite side of the Gulf, Pattaya is more energetic, and Koh Chang is a larger island for those with more time. For a broad plan, the Thailand 2-week itinerary shows how to fit short breaks into a longer trip.
FAQ
Is Hua Hin better for a weekend or a longer stay?
It works very well for a weekend, but two to four nights allow a national-park day trip and a quieter pace.
Can I use public transport in Hua Hin?
Local songthaews and tuk-tuks operate informally. Ride-hailing apps and taxis are useful, but many visitors rent a car or scooter for day trips.
When are the night markets open?
The main night market runs daily in the evening, while some weekend markets only open on certain days. Check before you go.
Is Hua Hin suitable for children?
Yes. The beach is gentle, there are water parks, and the pace is easier than in bigger resorts.
What should I wear when visiting temples and palaces?
Cover shoulders and knees, and remove shoes where required. See our temple etiquette guide.
