The White Temple, formally Wat Rong Khun, is Chiang Rai's best-known attraction: a contemporary Buddhist temple in white and mirrored glass designed by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. Many visitors see it on a long day trip from Chiang Mai along with the Blue Temple and the Black House museum. This guide explains how the day works, your transport choices, approximate costs and what to know before you go. Opening hours and entry fees can change, so check them before you travel.

Is a day trip a good idea?

A day trip is possible but long. You will spend six to eight hours on the road for a few hours of sightseeing. If you can, stay a night in Chiang Rai (see the Chiang Rai hub) so you can see the sights at a calmer pace and add the Golden Triangle or tea hills. If you only have one day, start early and limit the stops.

Many group tours follow a similar order, though stops and timing vary.

The White Temple (Wat Rong Khun)

The temple is a work in progress, with an ornate white main hall and a bridge across a small pond representing the path from the cycle of rebirth. The decoration includes mirrored pieces and detailed sculptures, and some buildings contain modern art with pop-culture figures. Fee and opening times for foreign visitors have been reported as changing, so check the temple's official information or the Tourism Authority of Thailand before going. Photography rules vary by building, so follow signs and staff instructions.

Allow about 1.5-2 hours. Arrive early to avoid crowds and heat.

Tip

Arrive at opening time if you can. Tour groups tend to arrive mid-morning, and the white surfaces reflect heat, so a hat, sunscreen and water help.

Dress code: This is a working temple. Cover shoulders and knees, avoid see-through or very short clothing, and be quiet in the main hall. See Thailand temple etiquette.

The Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten)

Located in Chiang Rai town, this temple is known for its deep blue interior and exterior with gold accents. It is smaller than the White Temple and usually needs about 30-45 minutes. Check current entry arrangements locally.

The Black House (Baan Dam)

Baan Dam is a collection of dark wooden buildings and art, created by artist Thawan Duchanee. It is quite different from the White Temple in mood and style. Allow about an hour and check current opening hours and entry fees before you go.

Optional extras

  • Singha Park: A large farm and park near Chiang Rai for cycling or relaxing; check access and fees.
  • Hot springs: Some routes stop at hot springs on the way; confirm locations and fees.
  • Golden Triangle: Usually needs a separate day or an overnight; see the Chiang Rai hub.

Best time to go

The cool season (Nov-Feb) is the most comfortable for sightseeing. In burning season (roughly Feb-Apr), smoke can reduce visibility and affect air quality in northern Thailand, and a long day trip gives you many hours outdoors. Check Air4Thai (air4thai.pcd.go.th), run by the Pollution Control Department, and adjust plans if readings are poor.

Heads up

Long road journeys, heat and smoke can be tiring or unhealthy. If you have respiratory or heart problems, check air quality and consider a different date. Make sure the vehicle has seat belts and the driver is licensed.

Safety and practical tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes that are easy to remove, and carry water.
  • Keep small bills for donations, snacks and toilets.
  • Choose registered operators and confirm prices before departure.
  • Seat belts are important on rural highways; be cautious with drivers who speed or overtake dangerously.
  • In an emergency call 191 (police), 1669 (medical) or 1155 (Tourist Police).
